Before creating course categories based on the syllabus grading outline, the settings of the course main category needs to be configured.

The course category is a category created for all courses by default. This category cannot be deleted and acts as the parent category for all child categories. The course category will be always at the top of the list in the gradebook Setup page and will share the same title as the course.

The Course Category

In the Grades page, Gradebook setup view, Click on Edit -> Edit Settings to view the available settings for the course category.

Edit Category Page for the Course Category

Apply the the following settings for the course category:

  • Aggregation: Natural
  • Exclude Empty Grades: unchecked

Using Natural aggregation for the course category is preferable for the following reasons:

  • The maximum grade for the course is fixed (100%).
  • Total grade of the course should be a direct summation of all items/categories in the course.

To learn more about aggregation please visit the following KB article

Including empty grades is also highly recommended. To learn more about grade types and their effect on Moodle Gradebook, please visit this KB article.
